KPLC union employees receive 12 percent pay increase

Kenya Power unionisable employees will receive a total of 12% pay increase per annum for the next two years following a collective bargaining agreement (CBA)signed today with the Kenya Electrical Trades and Allied Workers’ Union (KETAWU) in the Company’s headquarters at Stima Plaza.  

Notably, the CBA stipulates that the increase is on basic salary, while the employees will earn 10% more on housing allowance. Additionally, the unionisable staff who include those on temporary and long contracts, will get a 28% increase on their medical allowance (union employees constitute 70% of the Company’s workforce).

The Company’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr Ben Chumo also revealed that the lowest earning union employees will go home with a basic salary of Shs.15,327 and a housing allowance of Shs.13,934 and the highest paid employee will get a basic of Shs.36,400 and a housing allowance of Shs.33,091.

In addition, said Dr Chumo, 1,200 temporary union employees will be converted to permanent employees in the next two years saying the move is intended to enhance motivation levels for its human resource capacity even as the Company intensifies efforts to reinforce and expand the power network system in preparation of the 5,000 + additional power generation.

“Our employees are a valuable resource in carrying out the Company’s mandate to ensure continued business sustainability. As at 30th June 2014, the Company had a total workforce of 10,590 (on permanent and contract terms) serving 2,757,983 customers, translating to a staff-customer ratio of 260:1. This is an improvement from the previous year’s ratio of 223:1,” he said.
