Floods delay efforts to restore power supply to Lamu and Tana River Counties
4th February 2020…. Efforts to restore reliable power supply to Lamu and Tana River counties have been slowed down by flooding from river Sabaki following heavy rains experienced in the area.
Normal electricity supply to the two counties was affected when a power transmission tower fell on 2nd January due to flooding on river Sabaki. This affected the 220KV Kakuyuni-Garsen-Lamu transmission line serving the area. Alternative supply was sought on a 33KV line pending restoration of the transmission line.
The restoration exercise commenced on 13th January and is being carried out jointly by teams from Kenya Power and KETRACO. However, heavy rains and flooding has been a major hindrance to the exercise.
The alternative supply is a temporary solution that lacks the technical capacity and efficiency of the affected transmission line and as a result, customers are experiencing voltage drops and current fluctuations.
Kenya Power wishes to assure all affected customers that the issue is being addressed and will be resolved as soon as weather conditions are favourable.
