Kisumu high voltage power line collapses in heavy rain

03.01.2013

A heavy rain and wind storm that occurred at Ahero yesterday evening, pulled down four steel power pylons interrupting power supply to Kisumu City and environs.

The incident occurred at about 4.20 p.m. between Awasi and Ahero. It was not until nightfall that Kenya Power crews identified the fallen heavy steel structures on the high voltage (132kV) line that brings bulk power from Muhoroni substation to Mamboleo substation for distribution to customers in Kisumu and the environs.

However, Kenya Power system operators were able to restore power to affected customers by 6 p.m. through alternative supply lines (33kV) from Sondu Power station through Musaga substation.

Kenya Power has mobilised line construction crews to commence work to replace the collapsed towers and reinforce power supply to Kisumu County.
