Shs. 20 billion fund for electricity projects

Thousands of Kenyans will benefit from access to affordable electricity connection following increased funding of electricity projects by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Kenya (Gok).

Kenya Power Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Ben Chumo said this today during a meeting to launch additional financing of the Last Mile Connectivity Project by African Development Bank. The meeting involved the energy sector players, AfDB and the GoK representatives.

Dr Chumo said the additional financing of USD 152 million will enable the connection of 310,851 more customers in addition to the 314, 200 customers to be connected from the first phase of the project.

Similarly, AfDB and the GoK will also finance the Kenya – Tanzania interconnector, which will be implemented by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO).


KETRACO’s Ag. Managing Director and CEO, FCPA Fenardes Barasa, said that the Kenya – Tanzania interconnector is phase 1 of the wider Zambia – Tanzania – Kenya interconnector, which will link the Kenyan network to the South African Power Pool, providing opportunities for power trade in the Eastern and Southern African Power pools.

KETRACO will implement part of the project by constructing the 93km line from Isinya substation to Arusha substation. This part of the project will be financed by the Government of Kenya and African Development Bank at a cost of USD 7.16 million and USD 50 million respectively.

The AfDB County Director Mr. Gabriel Negatu hailed the relationship between the bank and the energy sector in Kenya. He particularly sited the support the Government of Kenya has provided to all the parties involved to see to it that such projects are implemented.
