Kenya Power supports counties’ growth

22nd September 2014

Kenya Power has negotiated with various financial institutions to provide credit to Kenyans to enable them connect electricity to their homes and businesses, the firm’s Managing Director and CEO Dr Ben Chumo has said.

He said already Equity and Family banks and Stima Savings and Credit Cooperative had signed up to provide the credit while the Company was in talks with other institutions including AFD of France for additional financing.

Dr Chumo made the remarks when he paid a courtesy call on Kisii Governor, Mr James Ongwae yesterday. He said the government had a target to electricity access to up to 75 percent of Kenyans, which would only be possible if the citizens at the grassroots were financially able to pay for the new connections.

At the same time, Dr Chumo said the Company would invest Shs.180 million in the complete rehabilitation of the power supply network in Kisii County and in Migori, saying the refurbished system would offer better quality and reliable service to the area and support social and economic activities on a 24 hour basis.

“We see counties as centres of new social and economic growth, and stable and reliable electricity will be critical for the envisaged development” remarked Dr Chumo. As he spoke, Kenya Power teams drawn from various operational areas in the country were engaged in a week long exercise to upgrade the power distribution network in Kisii town and environs.

He noted that the strengthened network would create capacity to accommodate connection of new customers under the government initiative to give 75 per cent of Kenyans access to electricity in the next four years. Consequently, he added, Kenya Power has commenced the campaign to connect one million customers to the electricity grid this year and appealed to leaders in the county to encourage citizens to apply for connection.

Governor Ongwae acknowledged that stable power supply was critical for the development in counties. He said emphasis by Kenya Power to follow devolution to the ground would support initiatives by the county governments to enhance the development of their people.
