Migori markets to benefit from public lighting project spearheaded by Kenya Power
Migori, Wednesday, 27 February 2019…. Migori County Governor, Okoth Obado has today commissioned a street lighting project at Kegonga and Maeta markets in Kuria East constituency.
The governor commissioned 94 street lanterns that were installed by Kenya Power at a cost of KShs.9 million.
Governor Obado said that the county government plans to spend a total of KShs.120 million to provide adequate public lighting to Migori’s commercial centres.
He added that the project was an initiative of the Government of Kenya to improve security and establish a 24-hour economy to boost development across the country.
Kenya Power’s Regional Manager for South Nyanza, John Guda said that the company has also completed other street lighting projects in Nyatike and Suna West constituencies.
“Plans are also underway to install street lights at Rongo University and its environs. We are working with the Migori County Government to ensure street lights are installed in all constituencies within record time,” said Mr. Guda
In addition to street lighting, the government has also earmarked KShs.2.5 billion for the Last Mile project in Migori. Kenya Power is currently implementing the Last Mile project on behalf of the Government to improve access to electricity across the country.
Kenya Power installed over 113,000 street lights countrywide in the year ended 30 June 2018. The company is focusing its efforts towards creating an enabling environment for economic growth and social well-being.
