Infrastructure Development

One integral part of infrastructure development is the transmission infrastructure development, with the other being distribution infrastructure development. The former aims to provide an additional 3,178MVA of transmission substation capacity and 3,325kms of new transmission power. The latter is concerned with improving the quality of supply, reduction of technical losses and expanding the network.

Current Projects

NAIROBI 220KV EXTRA HIGH VOLTAGE (EHV) AND SYSTEM REINFORCEMENT PROJECT
The scope of the project is as follows:

  1. Laying a 220kv cable from Embakasi 220/132kv substation and establishing a 220/66kv substation at City centre with 66kv links to Muthurwa,Ngong road,Parklands,Nairobi west,Cathedral and new Mamlaka(UON) 66/11kv substations to improve the quality of supply.
  2. Establishment of two new 66/11kv substations on Likoni road and Kirigiti(Kiambu town) to improve the quality of supply to the surrounding areas. The project will be completed by 2017.

Some of the transmission development strategies being implemented to maximize expected benefits from the projects include:

  • Develop the power system to operate under N-1 criteria
  • Extend scope of SCADA system to monitor and control more sub-stations and equipment.
  • Fast track ongoing projects
  • Comply with Transmission system maintenance schedules
  • Increase line carrying capacities as necessary
  • Convert single circuits to double circuits where applicable
  • Dedicated supply for heavy Industrial loads
  • Kenya Power will continue to maintain new transmission lines developed by Ketraco.
